Step by Step | Céim ar Chéim Lyrics & music by Nodlaig Step by step and stone by stone The emigrant path to the Carn was worn To lay the rock cradled in their hand And for one last look at their native land Left their mark like those before them Kings and chieftains passage way Colla Uais atop Sliabh Gallion Never more there plains shall stray Left their homes in the new world’s promise Hulled in ships they sailed away Lost forever, forgotten never Their hearts lay piled on Carntogher brae Céim ar chéim ‘s cloch ar chloch Ba é slí na n-imirceach suas an chnoc Le cloch a chur ar an Charn fadó Is le amharc siar ar Éire Ó

He came to me in the night This man, a wondrous sight I had me the love of my heart The best man from my side he’d never part We are broke That’s the bare truth He’ll go over the seas Over the waves to Scotland I pray he’ll come back to me This man, a wondrous sight That I’ll behold once more the love of my heart The best man, from whom I’ll never part.

Land of Dreams Lyrics & music by Nodlaig Ní Bhrollaigh (IMRO) Oh Land of dreams, always winter Soft the snow, bright the sun on the river run The crystals crown the trees Nature’s jewels adorn this Queen of ice Her heart a stone, commanding cold Oh Land of dreams, always winter Soft the snow, bright the sun on the river run The love and warmth of he With courage and with might He brought the light And thawed the endless Winter’s night He fought and brought the light The light.

An Bheann Fhada ‘Sí an Bheann Fhada craobhscaoileadh dar m’fhírinne rug an geall Nach bhfuil luibh dar órduigh an righ nach bhfuighteear ar gach taobh den ghleann Na craobhíní san gheimhreadh is cnódha buídhe ann ar bharr a’ choill Naoi bhfichid ar gach aon aca a’ claonadh go bun na gcrann Sé Gleann na Binn Fhada gleann a’ tsuaircis a bhfuil uaim ann is seinm téad Macnaidh óg gan ghruaim ann luaimneach a síor-chur léi Is binne ná na cuacha gach stuaidh-bhean na nglan-fhlot réidh Ag baint bainne de na buaibh ins an bhuailidh gach deireadh lae Tig súgh craobh is súgh talmhan ann, ‘s caora dearga ar bharra géag Ar gach taobh de’n ghleann seo ag deallradh ann le meas súgh craobh Iasc ar an linn agus coinnle ag na gasraidh féin Éire cuartuigh timcheall is an Bheann Fhada cá bhfuightheá a léitheid? The Benedy English translation by Francie Brolly I truthfully would declare that every plant ordained by God Is found on every side of the Benedy glen In the Winter, the delicate branches bear yellow nuts at the top of the wood Nine hundred on every one of them as they bend toward the bottom of the tree The Benedy is the glen full of joy where there is a gathering together and playing of strings Where the young men are not despondent but full of life Each stately woman with clean, flowing locks sings sweeter than the cuckoo As they milk the cows at the close of every day in the’ booley’ (milking-place in summer pasturage) There are raspberries and strawberries and red berries on the top of the branches The raspberries light up each side of the Glen The boys come out to lamp the fish in the pool You can search all of Ireland and you will not find a place that compares to the Benedy!

Dungiven | Dún Geimhin The eagle flies above the ancient valley It follows near the path the pilgrims made Near the Priory by the Roe Where golden memories ebb and flow There lies a chieftain brave In the Chapel’s holy knave The Castle stands beneath its sheltering mountain Sweet harpers’ strains are carried on the breeze Where Aengus boldly dared To lure Finvola fair Their love lives on In this land of lore of song

about

‘Cuimhní Rúnda’ is Nodlaig’s second solo album and is a journey through the times and places that have inspired her music over the last 20 years.

From the memories hidden in the depths of the Swilly, to the strains of the ancient harp in the Roe Valley that echo in Gaelic Scotland, to the emigrants leaving their mark at the top of the Carn, to the artistic reimaging of Narnia at CS Lewis Square.

This compilation of original works hopes to enhance our understanding of place and heritage and entice the visitor to experience first-hand these places of scenic beauty, mystery and lore.
